Mariah Carey Unveils Her Barbie, Just in Time for Christmas: ‘This Is So Cute!’ (Exclusive)

Just in time for the holidays, Mariah Carey — Grammy-winning icon, singer of 19 No. 1 hits, queen of all the holidays, creator of one of the best holiday songs of all time — has an early Christmas present for her fans. She loved Barbie.

Yes, available Friday, there will be an 11.5-inch Mariah Carey version for $75. The iconography is there: a smile, waves of hair, a smile, a microphone and even a butterfly ring.

For Carey, the honor of being performed in plastic form goes far beyond joining the ranks of other famous singers such as Cher, Beyoncé and Tina Turner. The timing is right: Mattel has sold more than a billion Barbie dolls, and Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has now surpassed more than a billion streams on Spotify.

“As a little girl, I didn’t have a lot of toys or things,” Carey tells PEOPLE exclusively, recalling her sometimes difficult childhood, growing up in a small house on Long Island, N.Y., with her mom, Patricia Carey, an opera singer. wanted was Superstar Barbie.”

She would eventually get one – actually more than one.

“When I first started working with the Barbie people, they sent me a bunch of Superstar Barbies and it was really sweet,” she says.

Carey is a famous (and incredible) perfectionist, whether it’s performance, style or decorating Christmas trees. (For the record, he says, he has two at home: one decorated with angels and butterflies and one peanut-inspired. (Kind of sad, but we decorate it with gifts from fans,” known as Lambs.) So when she started working with Mattel, she had some feedback.

“I had some notes, yes,” she begins. “The hair, other things. But when I saw my doll, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is so cute.’ Because it’s based on the Christmas dress I wear in the second ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ video, which was directed by Joseph Kahn.”

Carey did notice a slight difference between the red dress in the video and the miniaturized dress in her hands, though.

“They wouldn’t let the ‘V’ on the dress be as low as it is in the video,” she says with a slight laugh. – But I understand because it’s a holiday and everything else.

She sighs dramatically. “But I say, ‘Oh, Barbie, very humble.'”

Carey is excited though. “If I could go back and tell my little girl that one day I was going to make a Barbie in my image, I’d go crazy!”

Carey liked Barbies growing up and still enjoys the whole Barbie universe.

“I really liked the movie,” he adds of the recent release starring Margot Robbie. And her daughter Roe (she’s the mother of 12-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe; they’re fathered by ex-husband Nick Cannon) did too.

“She played with Barbie dolls, so it was great for her to see that. But Roe has something of her own. When I was growing up. I think there was more Barbie and stuff like that. She was more, like, on her iPad until she had her phone. He’s on his phone now.”

Carey’s Barbie doll will be available for purchase on Friday.
