Mark Hunt was born in South Auckland, New Zealand to a large Samoan family. Mark was a troubled child who served two prison sentences for violence. Masters himself spotted him during an altercation outside an Auckland nightclub; what impressed Sam Masters was his ability to knock people out because he knocked out a lot of people during that feud. He invited Hunt to his gym for formal training, and a week later won a Muay Thai Kickboxing match by knockout, launching Hunt’s career.

Mark started his kickboxing career in February 2000. Initially, he was used to promoting up-and-coming fighters from various promoters. He entered his K-1 tournament as an overwhelming underdog. He won the title by defeating Aumitagi, also known as “The Coconut Crusher,” in the quarterfinals.
In addition, he defeated Rony Sefo in the semi-finals and Phil Fagan in the final. Mark has competed in many other kickboxing titles, most recently on April 13, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan, where he was nominated as a challenger and competed for the K-1 Super Heavyweight Championship. He was defeated in the first round.
He competed in the Japan PRIDE Championship after joining Mixed Martial Arts. His first fight was against Hidehiko Yoshida, whom he submitted. In his second fight, he defeated wrestler Dan Bobish by technical knockout.
