Mark Wahlberg Says He Is Tempted to Skip His Famous 4 AM Workouts ‘More Often Than You Think’ (Exclusive)

Contrary to popular belief, Mark Wahlberg doesn’t always want to go to the gym!

Over the years, the actor’s early morning workouts have become legendary, as he often starts at 4am. However, he revealed to PEOPLE at the LIV Golf Las Vegas Big Game Party on Saturday that sometimes even he doesn’t want to practice on everyone.

“I feel it more often than you think,” Wahlberg, 52, tells PEOPLE when asked if he ever feels like I’m not working out.

But, he says, he usually starts his day sitting in a tub of 35-degree water and ice, known as a cold plunge, and that puts him in a good mood.

“I say, ‘Okay, I’m awake, I’m alive.’ We go right after that,” explains Wahlberg. “So I just go and do the work.”

Wahlberg often posts videos of his workouts on social media — earlier this week the actor revealed his impressive abs in an Instagram video showing him lifting his shirt — but admits rest and recovery are “equally important.”

Indeed, the actor was spotted indulging in relaxation in December, when he spent time with his family on holiday in Barbados – although his toned beach physique showed off the effects of his hard work at the gym during the trip.

However, Wahlberg says that staying in shape and doing things the hard way on purpose is important to his lifestyle.

Mark Wahlberg says he’s ’embracing his age’ in recent roles: ‘I’m looking forward to playing a grandfather’

“I don’t want to miss something, because if, God forbid, I overdo it, I don’t show up, I don’t put in the effort and I don’t get the results I want, I know why. I don’t want to live with that regret,” he says, adding, “I always feel better afterwards and just go and get it.”

On days when he is not completely himself, Family plan star says he’ll be doing less in the gym or maybe not doing exactly what he planned. But sometimes his approach will change during practice.

“I started slow and the next thing you know I’m up to 12 and I’m getting the best workout I’ve had in a long time,” he says.

And, he explains, his achievements in the gym, as well as in life, are due to his strong work ethic.

“But the hard work I put in has always been the reason for my success,” he adds, “so I attribute my faith and the amount of effort I put into everything to that. So why would I do anything different?”
