- In 2009, Mary was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In an interview, she said:
When I was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I felt so alone and so sad. I was separated from my family and all those people who were trying to be there for me, but you just don’t understand that having this wall in your life, you can’t appreciate this huge change that has just happened in your life.”
- After she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, she began to speak out for the cause of type 1 diabetes. She also supports and works with JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), the world’s largest non-profit funder of type 1 diabetes research.
