Which Attractions Are Leaving Disney World Forever to Make Way for New Lands — Plus, When They’ll Close

Walt Disney World fans can prepare to see some big (and exciting!) changes at the park over the next few years.

Following the announcement of some big new lands and attractions at the D23 conference on Saturday, August 10 — including the new land of Villains and Encanto and Cars rides — Disney also revealed what will be leaving the park permanently to make way for updates.

Although the company confirmed that permits have already been filed to revive these new attractions, park visitors still have time to enjoy some of their favorite lands and rides before they leave.

Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America

To bring his beloved Cars Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater characters to live in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, Disney will say goodbye to what is now the Rivers of America area and Tom Sawyer’s Island.

“To make way for this brand new frontier, the rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrain for rally races featuring some of the world’s most famous racers,” Disney said in a press release.

Fans can expect “two new automotive-themed attractions” coming to Frontierland in the area along the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. In the meantime, guests can still make the most of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America until at least the end of 2024.

“Ahead of next year’s opening, guests will have plenty of time to experience the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it is today,” the statement added.

DinoLand and DINOSAUR

Fans of the DINOSAUR attraction at Animal Kingdom’s DinoLand will soon say goodbye to the area for good as the park prepares to replace it with a new 11-acre Tropical America themed section.

Park visitors will have the opportunity to experience the lush biodiversity of the Central and South American regions in this new land, which follows the African and Asian themed areas that debuted with the Animal Kingdom park.

And of course, Disney will use their favorite stories that are set in this climate. Tropical Americas promises “the first ever Encanto-thematic attraction” and completely new Indiana Jones– inspired adventure.

Additional changes

Disney’s first hanging roller coaster will officially open on a new Monsters Inc. land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and construction on the project is expected to begin in 2025. While it has not yet been confirmed where exactly the land will be located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, some fans are speculating that it could take over the Muppet*Vision 3D movie attraction.
