Mathivathani Erambu, affectionately known as Mathi, was born in Sri Lanka. She hails from Punkudutivu Island near the Jaffna Peninsula. She reportedly studied higher education at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, in the early eighties.

Mathivathani was born to Earambu Master and his wife Sinnammal. Her father is a teacher in the village and her mother is a housewife. She is the third child and has a younger brother, Balachandran, who is also a member of the militant group LTTE. He was killed in a battle with the Sri Lankan army in 1987.

They got married on October 1, 1984 at the Thiruporur Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu. He was killed in battle with the Sri Lankan army on May 18, 2009. They have two sons and a daughter. Their son, Charles Anthony Prabhakaran, is the head of the LTTE’s information and technology wing. Velupillai named him after one of his most trusted lieutenants, who was killed in a gunfight with the Sri Lankan army. On May 18, 2009, Charles was killed in a gun battle with Sri Lankan troops. Their youngest son, Balachandran Prabhakaran, just 12 years old, was reportedly killed in May 2009 after being captured by the Sri Lankan army; however, the Sri Lankan army denied shooting him. Their daughter’s name is Dwaraga (deceased). On May 20, 2009, the army discovered their daughter’s body.

Madiwatani met Prabhakaran in college, when Madi and several of her friends were actively involved in protests against the government. They were taken to Madurai where she met LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran who then sent the schoolgirls to Balasinghams’ Tiru Thiruvanmiyur residence. Prabhakaran was staying at the Madras Legislative Assembly Hotel and visited Adele’s Thiruvanmiyur residence on official business. After the Holi celebrations that year, he went to Thiruvananthapuram more frequently to meet Mativatani and they started dating. Since Thiruvanmiyur is a conservative Brahmin suburb of Chennai, their extramarital affairs and LTTE laws prohibiting marriage caused problems. Eventually, a compromise was reached and a new general rule was established, allowing those who had served the organization for five years the freedom to marry, allowing the couple to marry.

Mathivathani Erambu was reportedly killed by the Sri Lankan army; however, the army later denied killing her and said they did not know her whereabouts. On May 20, 2009, the Sri Lankan army discovered the bodies of Mathivathi and her daughter Duvaraga.
