In 2016, he received the Danny Litwhiler Defensive Player of the Year Award for his standout performance, stranding 12 runners on the season and leading the Big Ten in conference-only stats with an impressive total of 11 doubles in B1G play.
Although he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 24th round (No. 723 overall) of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, Byars decided to return for his senior season at MSU, showing his commitment and loyalty to the team. In 2017, he showed his skills as a catcher, starting 47 games while overcoming injuries that caused him to miss five games.

How did Matt Byars die?
Thursday and Friday saw the heartbreaking loss of three young lives in separate road accidents, leaving behind a deep sense of sadness. In one tragic accident, a motorcycle collided with a tractor trailer, claiming the lives of 22-year-old Shawn Patrick Clayton of Moore and 19-year-old Shannon Humphrey of Byars, both riding the ill-fated motorcycle.
According to Lt. Gerald Davidson of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Clayton was traveling northbound on Interstate 35 when the crash occurred. While exiting the SE 82 exit ramp, the motorcycle struck the right rear of a stationary tractor-trailer. Tragically, Clayton, who was not wearing a helmet, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Humphrey, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Hillcrest Medical Center. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she was unable to overcome her injuries, marking a devastating loss for those who knew her. Shannon Humphrey was known for her athletic prowess, especially in baseball, where she displayed exceptional skill and talent, posting an impressive .271 batting average and driving in 25 runs. Her absence leaves a void on the court and a void in the hearts of her teammates and loved ones.
Another young life was tragically taken Thursday in a car accident on State Highway 9 in Norman. The victim of this horrific event has been identified as 20-year-old Matthew James Bauman of Maplewood, Minnesota. Although not all the details of the tragedy have been revealed, the somber statements from the Norman police underscore the sad nature of the incident.
Matthew Bauman was an exceptional student known for his unwavering commitment to education at the University of Oklahoma. He previously excelled in basketball and baseball while attending Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois. His passion and enthusiasm for sports and academics was evident in the success he achieved on the field and in the classroom during his time at Lodi High School in Wisconsin.
