David Byrne News

Here Lies Love, the upcoming musical, will open on June 17. David Byrne and the American Federation of Musicians Local 802 have reached an agreement to hire live musicians. Byrne and Fatboy Slim co-wrote the music for the show, which will now feature 12 musicians, a Local 802 representative told Pitchfork.

Here Lies Love: David Byrne and the Broadway Musicians Union have reached a labor agreement

Tino Gagliardi, President and CEO of Local 802, said in a statement: “Broadway is a very special place with the best artists and performances in the world, and we are pleased that this agreement honors that tradition.

The music for Here Lies Love will now be composed of nine musicians and three actor-musicians, all union members, according to a Local 802 representative.

Last month, the union expressed concern about the show’s intent to use pre-recorded music, saying it violated a contract provision that requires all musicals performed in Broadway theaters to employ at least 19 musicians.

A representative for the production responded to criticism from The New York Times by stating that the choice to use prerecorded music was “part of the karaoke genre inherent in the musical and the concept of the production.”

Byrne defended the production decisions in his own statement, citing the “dance club’s immersion in song and act” as an example of the show’s unconventional setup. “Live voice performance over artificial pre-recorded tracks is key to the creative concept. The production brought out theater chairs and built a dance floor. No more proscenium stage,” she said in part.

Imelda Marcos, the controversial First Lady of the Philippines, was the subject of the musical Here Lies Love, which had its world premiere at the Public Theater in New York in 2013. It has since performed in Seattle and London, and will make its Broadway debut. the 20th of July.
