Matthew Lewis Is in No 'Rush' to Return for Harry Potter Reboot but Would 'Consider' It If Asked (Exclusive)

Matthew Lewis may have already devoted a decade of his life to recording Harry Potter, but he’s not sure if he’s ready for more.

The actor who played Neville Longbottom in all eight Harry Potter movies, tells PEOPLE he’s “in no rush to get back out into the world” for Harry Potter Restarting the TV Max is running on.

“The reason I got into this business in the first place was because I have a very short attention span,” says Lewis, 34. “I’m very, very bad at sustaining anything for any length of time. I’ve had many, many hobbies and passions throughout years. I still don’t do one. I fall madly in love with things and then forget about them almost immediately.”

Lewis, who spoke to PEOPLE at the Harry Potter store in New York City as he unveiled the new green-screen experience in the form of a broomstick and props from the films on display, admits he’s intrigued by what the showrunners will do with the series, which is currently slated for a 2026 release. He says that if someone called him tomorrow and asked him to participate, it would be difficult to decide what to do.

“It’s not something I’m looking at or looking to do, but I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it,” he says. “I’d be very interested to see if it was Neville as a grown man – a completely different vibe. That could be interesting. I’d definitely look into it and think about it.”

Lewis tells PEOPLE that one of his favorite things about his job is that it’s constantly changing, so he never has to “stick to one thing.”

“I’ve been a nurse, I’ve been a policeman, I’ve been a soldier, I’ve been a wizard, I’ve been all sorts of things,” he says. – I never know what’s next and I love that.

When Lewis and his Harry Potter costar Jason Isaacs (who played Lucius Malfoy) were at MegaCon in Orlando, Fla., in February, when they were asked who they would like to play (besides their original characters) in the TV reboot.

Isaacs opted for Dobby the house elf, “because you don’t have to go to make-up,” while Lewis said there was no one he “wanted to even try to play.”

After some prodding from Isaacs, Lewis admitted that the book character Remus Lupin (played by David Thewlis in the films) is one of his favorites. “If I had to try, I would,” he said at last.

He has one Harry Potter star who almost certainly won’t appear in the reboot — and that’s the man himself. Daniel Radcliffe, the first boy survivor, told ComicBook.com in July 2023 that he had no intention of participating in the new project.

“I’m definitely not looking for that in any way,” he said, adding that the show is a “fresh start” for a new set of people.

“But I wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited that that torch has passed,” he added of the show. “But I don’t think I need to lay him down physically.”

According to Deadline, the reboot is set to span “10 consecutive years” and feature stories from all seven books written by JK Rowling.
