An 18-year-old man died after standing up through a roof hatch and was hit by a beam while in a shopping center garage in Canada.
The Edmonton Police Service said in a statement that West Branch patrol officers responded to a welfare call at North Park in West Edmonton Mall at 1:45 p.m. local time Thursday.
“It was reported to police that a Toyota Camry sedan was driving through the parking lot when an adult passenger stood up through the roof of the sedan,” police said in a statement. “As the vehicle passed under the ramp, the passenger hit a concrete beam.”

Emergency services responded and the 18-year-old was taken to hospital where he “succumbed to his injuries”. His identity has not yet been made public.
The 17-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger were not injured, according to the police.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the incident, but noted that “speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in this crash.”

The West Edmonton Mall referred PEOPLE to the police department Friday for an investigation.

The shopping center is no stranger to the headlines. Last month, three people were seriously injured, but not life-threatening, in a shooting last month, the police said then.
