Mauricio Umansky Says Ignoring His ‘Issues’ with Kyle Richards on Buying Beverly Hills ‘Would’ve Been Awkward’ (Exclusive)

Mauricio Umansky opens up about the challenges of filming with Kyle Richards amid their split.

Ahead of the second season premiere on Friday Buying Beverly Hillsagency executive revealed to PEOPLE how he and Richards overcame their marital struggles on the Netflix real estate drama.

“There were definitely challenges,” he says. “It was happening, it was real life. We had the cameras on.”

Umansky continues that he and Richards had the “choice” to “pretend it wasn’t happening” while filming. However, he adds that, “I think it would be embarrassing on television.”

“The reality is that we’re going through our problems after being married for 28, 29 years. We did it and we decided to put it on camera and it was great, and now the audience can see the way we interacted with each other.”

He explains that viewers will see “real life issues that keep happening” in decades-long marriages.

In the second season trailer released last Thursday, fans saw what appeared to be a real estate agent and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills the star makes the difficult decision to reconsider his marriage.

The opening scene shows the couple – who met in 1994 and married in January 1996 – in their bedroom as Umansky says: “I’ve been under so much stress and the travel is obviously taking a toll on us.”

In the following clip, the couple appears to sit down with their daughters during a family dinner to address the tense situation. Umansky and Richards share daughters Alexia, 27, Sophia, 24, and Portia, 16, as well as Kyle’s eldest daughter Farrah Brittany, 35, from her first marriage to ex Guraish Aldjufrie.

“We wanted to have this conversation when we’re all together, for obvious reasons,” says the Bravo star. “I’m really sorry for you guys…” The clip quickly cuts to another scene where Umansky confirms, “She wanted a divorce,” referring to his wife.

PEOPLE first confirmed that the couple split in July 2023. A source close to the two said, “Kyle and Mauricio have been separated for a while, but they’re still living under the same roof. They’re staying friendly as they figure out what’s next for them and their families. ”

Following the news in July, Richards and Umansky shared statements on their respective Instagram accounts.

“Regarding the news that came out about us today… All claims of a divorce are false,” they wrote. “However, yes, we had a difficult year. The most challenging in our marriage. But we both love and respect each other very much.”

The statement continued: “No one was wrong. While we are in the public eye, we ask that we be able to deal with our issues privately. While it may be fun to speculate, please do not create false stories to further the derogatory narrative.”

2nd season Buying Beverly Hills will premiere on Netflix on Friday, March 22.
