May December Star Charles Melton Left Out of Best Supporting Actor Race at 2024 Oscars

Charles Melton will not compete for the golden statuette at the upcoming 2024 Oscars.

After his much-buzzed-about performance in May December alongside Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, the 33-year-old was left off the star-studded list for best supporting actor when the nominees were announced on Tuesday morning.

Those who made the list include Sterling K. Brown (American fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), Ryan Gosling (Barbie), Mark Ruffalo (Poor people).

Melton previously took home a Gotham Award for his performance as morally challenged Joe Yoo in the film, and was nominated for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.

May December Review PEOPLE: Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman face off in disturbing comedy

May December stars Portman, 42, as an actress named Elizabeth who is preparing to play a role based on the life of Gracie (Moore, 63), who made headlines 20 years ago for hooking up with teenager Joe (played as an adult by Melton).

The love affair between Gracie and Joe is the controversy at the heart of the film, which began when she was 36 and he was 13. She ended up landing her in prison because of the age difference — though after her release, the two married and started a family together.

Director Todd Haynes, who began work on the script in 2019, spoke about the impact the real-life case of Mary Kay Letourneau had on May December, alongside “90s tabloid culture” as a whole. “That was a real jumping off point for me,” he said.

May December it has received critical acclaim since its release. Melton, a former CW star Riverdale, won a 2023 Gotham Award for his supporting role in the film. Co-star Moore celebrated his honor on Instagram during the November 2023 ceremony.

How Mary Kay Letourneau inspired Julianne Moore May December

Melton recently said that Riverdale “it helped me improve this work ethic,” he said identity card“I learned so much while I was there. I created relationships that I will have for the rest of my days.”

He then went a step further, crediting the show for teaching him what a professional acting program would have taught him, saying, “Riverdale it truly was my Juilliard—I learned and grew, played and took risks. I was allowed to do that.”

Melton played football player Reggie Mantle throughout the show’s seven-year run and called the series finale last August “bittersweet.”

“But I’m so happy that it brought joy to so many people,” he added.

The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 10, from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, beginning at 7:00 PM ET.
