- Mum-of-2 Michelle Milton from the UK slipped on a rock while fishing and says her leg was scraped by the nylon fishing line in her pocket
- The “ordinary scratch” became infected, requiring Milton to undergo 55 surgeries
- Milton is now begging doctors to amputate her leg to spare her further operations
A UK mum has undergone 55 operations after a small scratch on her leg developed a serious infection – and now she wants doctors to amputate her leg.
When Michelle Milton went fishing with her brother in 2019, the mother-of-two slipped on some rocks — and the nylon fishing line in her pocket got caught in her leg, according to Wales Online.
Within days, what she called a “simple scratch” became infected, the paper reported, and Milton, who is from Essex County, was rushed to hospital when her leg swelled.
While it’s unclear if she performed any wound care after the initial injury, the CDC recommends “cleaning all minor cuts and injuries that break the skin (such as blisters and scrapes) with soap and water.”

When doctors discovered Milton’s wound was resistant to antibiotics, it triggered the first of 55 operations he would have for his infected leg.
“I never thought fishing line could cause so much damage. I just want my leg,” said Milton, 40, according to Wales Online.
“Every day is filled with suffering, and I begged them to stop it. They just keep cutting my leg. I can barely walk or sit. There will be nothing left of me,” she added.
Milton had four skin grafts and 21 debridements, which the National Institutes of Health describes as “removal of devitalized tissue.”
She also had 30 “flushes,” the British term for washing a wound, which the National Institutes of Health says is a “vigorous” procedure used to clean a wound.

However, nothing prevented the spread of the infection. “I am sick of spending my life in [the] hospital,” she told SWNS via New York Post.
The outlet reported that the infection was spreading down her leg — and Milton may have developed a blood clot as a result of the ongoing infection.
“I don’t know how much more I can take,” added Milton, who has a daughter (17) and a son (20).
“I was not [a mom] in years. “My mom did everything for my children,” she said Fast.
“Nothing seems to be working, none of the treatments are helping,” Milton continued. “I can’t believe a scratch like that left me.”
