The National Water Resources Board has recently taken steps to address the expected water shortages caused by the upcoming El Niño sensation, which may cause a further reduction in water levels in the Angat dam. The Metropolitan Water and Sewer System (MWSS) reduced raw water distribution as part of these efforts from the previous 52 cubic meters per second (CMS) between April 2, 2023 and June 30, 2023 and 50 CMS between on July 1, 2023 and on July 7. 2023, up to 48 CMS. As a result, Maynilad, the water supply corporation in charge of Metro Manila’s western area, would receive less water than necessary to maintain the standard level of service. Consequently, from July 12, 2023, daily cuts will be introduced in several regions of the western zone.

Due to the reduced amount of raw water, Maynilad must appropriately allocate the scarce supply to meet the water demands of the affected communities. To reduce the effects of minor releases from the Angat dam, Maynilad has developed a number of initiatives to increase supply. Also, local rains in the Ipo basin have helped to some extent by increasing water resources. Despite the drastically reduced allowance, Maynilad tried to make his clients as comfortable as possible.
Daily service interruptions will only be from 7:00 pm to 4:00 am and, in certain locations, until 6:00 am. lower. By scheduling outages outside of peak periods, Maynilad hopes to strike a compromise between meeting the water needs of affected communities and maximizing the use of the supply.
