Megan Mullally Jokes She and Friend Nathan Lane Like to ‘Have Sex’ When They Hang Out (Exclusive)

Megan Mullally doesn’t hesitate when asked what she and friend Nathan Lane like to do together outside of work.

“We have sex,” she jokes in the new issue of PEOPLE. “Not many people know this, so this is perfect for your readers.”

Not missing a beat, Lane chimes in: “It’s really the only heterosexual relationship I’ve had in my life, and it’s become so meaningful to me.”

Mullally, 64, and Lane, 67 – who are married to actor Nick Offerman, 53, and Broadway producer Devlin Elliott, 51 – star in the new comedy Dicks: The Musicalwhich is a showcase for their impeccable timing.

“We are cut from the same cloth,” explains the Will & Grace Emmy winner. “We have that same old-school sense of comedy rhythm.”

The two first met in the 1990s and have since worked together for a one-night benefit concert in 2014. Guys and dolls at Carnegie Hall, and later that year in Terrence McNally’s Broadway show It’s just a show.

But dick (which has been granted an interim SAG-AFTRA agreement) is a whole different beast. They play a divorced couple, long estranged, whose grown sons (the film’s co-writers Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) are twins who were divorced years ago and want to reunite their parents.

Lane didn’t know what to make of the script when he read it. “I wasn’t sure about that. I thought it was outrageous,” he admits.

But after meeting Sharp and Jackson, “I fell in love with them,” he continues. “This whole young generation, they’re not really worried about what you think, what your judgment is about what they’re doing.”

“To be a part of something like this at a time when books are banned and there’s a whole ‘Don’t say gay’ campaign. . . I just thought, for that reason alone, it was worth doing,” adds Lane. “It will be interesting to see what the reaction will be. There are people who are just waiting to be offended.”

Mullally admits she tried to make Lane laugh while they were filming together.

“There was one scene where we are lying on the bed in the post-coital . . . or after every crazy thing we did,” she says. “The director never yelled, cut, so I just kept crawling on Nathan. At a certain point Nathan said, ‘Cut.’ Cut out. Please, God, cut it!’ It went on and on.”

Lane adds: “There has been a lot of improvement. I have never experienced such an amount of freedom. Robin Williams and I would beg [The Birdcage director] Mike Nichols for what he called a ‘free take’ where he would let us improvise a bit. But this every shot was free.”

Dicks: The Musical, which costars Saturday night liveBowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion, is in select theaters Friday before opening wider on October 13.
