Gastro epidemic in Melbourne

A gastro outbreak at a wedding venue in Albert Park, where more than 200 people fell ill, has been linked to a fourth case. The Victorian Department of Health says 40 people who attended the wedding on Saturday are also unwell and 26 people have complained of gastro-intestinal symptoms after the wedding at the Park restaurant on Friday. The park voluntarily shut down for two weeks, according to a report in The Age on Tuesday, after a third event over the weekend was linked to the food outbreak that affected the September 13 and 16 events. According to an update from the Department of Health, there were actually two weddings linked to gastronomic attacks over the weekend, not just one.

A department representative said: “We have been made aware that a number of people were unwell after attending events at The Park Melbourne on Friday 22 September and Saturday 23 September.” In order to establish the origin of the outbreak and ensure that all necessary infection prevention and control measures are in place, we are continuing to work with Port Phillip Council and the South East European Public Health Unit. According to the Department of Health, at least 216 people complained of stomach aches after three weddings and meals at The Park over the past two weeks.

Several of them were later sent to hospitals. Three days later, on Saturday September 16, 80 guests at a wedding at the same location reported stomach pains. Despite an investigation into gastroenterology outbreaks by health authorities, the park has been allowed to continue operating. Then, after the wedding on Friday, September 22nd, 26 people reported being sick, and 40 people reported getting sick after the wedding on Saturday, September 23rd. Stay tuned for the latest news.
