Melissa Barrera and Angus Cloud, in One of His Final Roles, Battle a Child Vampire in Abigail Trailer

Melissa Barrera and the late Angus Cloud face a terrifying monster in their latest horror film: a 12-year-old girl.

On Thursday, Universal Pictures released its first trailer for Abigailwhich is 33-year-old Barrera’s first film since being fired from Scream franchise in November. The new horror flick also marks one of Cloud’s final appearances following his death at the age of 25 on July 31, 2023.

Abigaildirected by Barrera twice Scream contributors to Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett), follows her character, named Joey, as she teams up with a group of criminals (organized by Giancarlo Esposito) to kidnap a rich man’s daughter for an attempted $50 million ransom attack.

As the plot begins, Joey is assigned to stand by the girl, named Abigail, and ensure she stays safe until the debacle is over – until Abigail herself ominously threatens the group and they lock themselves in her home. As it turns out, Abigail is some kind of vampire, and the would-be kidnappers find themselves facing a much more difficult and deadly task than they first imagined.

“After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to raise a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “In an isolated mansion, the kidnappers begin to shrink, one by one, and discover, to their growing horror, that they are locked inside without a normal girl.”

Abigail also stars Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett and Kevin Durand. The screenwriter of the film is Guy Busick, who wrote the last two Scream movies and slasher Radio Tišina from 2019 Ready or notand screenwriter Stephen Shields.

The film marks a turning point from Scream for Barrera, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett following the successful revival of the iconic meta-slasher series in 2022. Scream reboot and 2023 Scream VI. The latest entry in the franchise was its first film to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office since 1997. scream 2.

In August, news broke that Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett were moving on Scream. Barrera remained committed to acting Scream VII until November, when the film studio Spyglass fired her over her social media posts regarding the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

In the next month, both Barrera Scream actress Jenna Ortega and Scream VIIprincipal Christopher Landon also left the project.

Cloud, who rose to fame playing the character Fezco in the HBO series Euphoriadied of acute intoxication after an accidental overdose, as PEOPLE confirmed in September.

Abigail it’s in theaters on April 19.
