Melissa Barrera Cut from Next Scream Sequel Due to Her Social Media Posts About Israel-Hamas War

Melissa Barrera will not be back next time Scream continuation.

The actress, 33, will no longer star in the upcoming seventh installment of the horror franchise after she was removed from the cast over her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war, according to reports from Diversity and The Hollywood Reporter.

Diversity reported that insiders considered Barrera’s comments anti-Semitic.

“Spyglass’ position is unequivocally clear: we have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or hate speech in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortions of the Holocaust, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” said Spyglass, the studio behind Scream VIIsaid in a statement to PEOPLE.

Representatives for Barrera did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

In a written message from her Instagram Story quoted in the report i circulating on social media after the news, Barrera reportedly wrote: “I have been actively looking for videos and information on the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts, etc. Why? Because the Western media only show the other side. Why they do that, I’ll let you figure out for yourself.”

Barrera played Sam Carpenter in both 2022 films Scream and this year’s Scream VI. Her character is introduced as Scream daughter of villain Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). The character was set to follow in the footsteps of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott as the franchise’s new lead.

Barre’s Sam is the older sister of Tera, played by Jenna Ortega.

Along with Barrera and Ortega, Scream VI cast included Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Legacy Scream member Courteney Cox and Scream IVHayden Panettiere. (Neve Campbell and David Arquette were also in fifth place Screamalthough Campbell did not return for the sixth due to a contract dispute.)

Seventh Scream is set to direct Happy death day directed by Christopher Landon. Landon takes over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpino and Tyler Gillett after their co-directing roles on both Scream (2022) and Scream VI.
