Friends, loved ones and colleagues are remembering the late actor Ryan O’Neal, who “passed away peacefully” on Friday, his son Patrick O’Neal confirmed on Instagram. The Love story and Peyton Place the actor was 82 years old.
“I feel great sadness over my father’s passing,” his daughter, Oscar-winning actress Tatum O’Neal, told PEOPLE. “He meant the world to me. I loved him very much and I know he loved me too. I will miss him forever and feel very lucky that we ended up on such good terms.”
Mia Farrow, who starred with O’Neal on ABC Peyton Placeshe also paid tribute on Instagram.
“I was 18 when we did the pilot for Peyton Place. He was a few years older than me, happily married to the beautiful actress Joanna Moore, and they had a new baby (Tatum). He was so confident and very, very funny!” she wrote in the caption, alongside a photo of her and O’Neal.
“There were times when he made me laugh so uncontrollably that we had to stop filming,” she continued. “He was my first, very secret crush. I was so shy I could barely look at him.”
Barbra Streisand also expressed her grief in a touching post.
“So sad to hear the news of Ryan O’Neal’s passing,” she wrote on Instagram. “We shot two films together, What’s up doctor? and The main event. He was funny and charming and will be remembered.”

Journalist Piers Morgan, who interviewed O’Neal on CNN in 2011, wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “His performance in Love story she was an icon herself. Great, a real movie star, a complex guy.”
Morgan also shared a screenshot of a cheeky email that O’Neal — who the broadcaster called “extremely candid and emotional about his harrowing personal life” — sent after their conversation.
“I wanted to let you know that after my interview with you, my regular role in ‘Bones’ was written off, that my agents are not returning my calls, and that the Malibu City Council has initiated an action to move me out of town. O’Neal joked in the letter.
“Can’t believe Ryan O’Neal is gone… Incredible talent, incredible beauty,” Lee Grant, other Peyton Place Costar, wrote on X. “A gift from an artist we are lucky to have so much captured forever.”
