Mia Matsumiya started the Perv_Magnet Instagram account last month as a way to respond to and expose the thousands of rude and sexist messages she has received from men online over the last ten years.
The Los Angeles violinist says the messages go beyond shame.
According to Matsumiya, “There are definitely messages that range from flirtations like ‘Hey honey, you’re hot’ to low-level microaggressions.” “At the other end of the spectrum are lyrics that say, ‘I know where you live and I’m going to rape you.’ Catting is more typical, otherwise I’d be terrified all the time.”
Matsumiya claimed that due to her unusual interests, she was sometimes held responsible for the messages she received.

Matsumiya is a violinist who plays with rock bands and in movies, she has infiltrated cults like the Aetherius Society out of curiosity, she is interested in transhumanism, the idea that technology can change what humans are capable of, she dabbles into cryptozoology, the study of animal myths like Bigfoot, and for fun twists his body around in tight spaces like newspaper racks.
However, she argued that her particular hobbies are not a justification for thinking that she is susceptible or deserving of the sexist and misogynistic messages directed at her.
In Matsumiya’s own words, “I don’t think I’m acting wrong, maybe I’m a little weird, but I’m not doing anything to hurt people. “I think I should speak my mind without death threats. I shouldn’t be the one hiding, in my opinion. Texters need to change their practices.
Matsumiya stated that while he would not delete the account entirely, he would accept individual apologies for his posts.
In exchange for an apology, Matsumiya added, “I would definitely be willing to delete or not post your posts.” However, all the apology messages I’ve received so far have been sent anonymously, so I’m not sure who to forgive, or even if I’ve saved their messages. We sincerely appreciate your apology.
