Michael J. Fox’s 4 Kids: All About Sam, Aquinnah, Schuyler and Esmé

Award-winning actor Michael J. Fox has many roles under his belt, but perhaps his proudest yet is the role of a father.

The Back to future star has four children with his wife Tracy Pollan, to whom he has been married for more than 30 years, but he once joked with Shortened version that it “feels like five” sometimes.

He also spoke to the publication about his best parenting advice: “Always be available to your kids. Because if you say, ‘Give me five minutes, give me 10 minutes,’ it’ll be 15, it’ll be 20. And then when you get there, shine will wear out regardless of what they wanted to share with you.”

He continued: “I never got up to see anything that one of my children wanted to show me that wasn’t rewarded.”

The actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, and seven years later he went public with the diagnosis. In 2009, he spoke with Good housekeeping about how the disease affected his family life.

“If I reach for something, they’ll just do it and keep going,” he said of his children. “[They have learned] empathy, resilience, and also sorting out what’s important from what’s not—things like vanity.”

Fox has a close relationship with all four of his grown children, and they often appear on his Instagram account.

“Our children are beautiful, sensitive, intelligent, empathetic, independent, compassionate, adventurous, lovely people,” he wrote in a tribute to Pollan on Mother’s Day in May 2022. “It’s your fault. We all love you very much. Happy Mother’s Day.”

Fox’s children were featured in his 2023 documentary. And Beyond: The Movie by Michael J. Fox. In May 2023 Family ties alum spoke with PEOPLE about the project and how his family feels about letting cameras into their lives. “They all gave me their permission. And then, at different times, they withdrew their permission,” he said.

Sam Michael Fox, 34

Fox and Pollan welcomed their first child, Sam Michael Fox, on May 30, 1989. Sam is the couple’s only son, and Fox told PEOPLE at the time of his excitement about becoming parents for the first time.

“We did the whole womb music thing, where we put headphones on Tracy’s belly and played everything from Vivaldi to the Allman Brothers,” he said in December 1989.

Sam is almost identical to his father, and their uncanny resemblance is evident when they pose next to each other in photos.

“Just from my POV, you’re not getting older, you’re just getting taller,” Michael wrote in a birthday tribute to his son in 2021. “Happy birthday @palekidd, I love you.”

Another similarity Sam shares with his father? He also works in the entertainment industry. He has produced various media himself, such as Ben Barnes’ 11:11 music video, a short film Good grief and his father’s documentary, Still: a Michael J. Fox movie.

On Sam’s 34th birthday in May 2023, Fox shared another sweet tribute on Instagram. The proud dad posted a photo of his eldest child blowing out his birthday candles, as well as two photos of the father-son duo hugging on a boat, including one of Fox planting a kiss on Sam’s head.

“Happy birthday to my big bouncing boy @palekidd you are the best. Proud to be your daddy. Love you!” he captioned the post.

Aquinnah Kathleen Fox, 29

On February 15, 1995, the couple had twin daughters, Aquinnah Kathleen Fox and Schuyler Frances Fox.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Aquinnah studied at Duke University, earning bachelor’s degrees in psychology, visual and media studies, and art history. During her studies, Aquinnah was also a member of Duke University’s ballet program.

She previously worked as a brand and marketing strategist in New York, and now lives in Los Angeles working as an assistant at Annapurna Pictures.

In an adorable tribute to his twin girls, Michael posted a series of photos of Aquinnah and her sister in honor of their 29th birthdays.

“Double love. Happy birthday. You’re crushing it. I love you, Doods ❤️,” he captioned the post.

Schuyler Frances Fox, 29

Schuyler Frances Fox is the other half of the Fox and Pollan twins.

Schuyler attended Pomona College and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, according to her LinkedIn profile. After college, she worked as a project coordinator at Columbia University Medical Center before returning to school and graduating from Harvard University with a master’s degree in education. She currently works as an assistant producer in Massachusetts.

Both girls keep a low profile, with most of their social media accounts set to private. However, they did step out in June 2023 to support their father at the Spring Moving Image Awards, where Fox accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award. The twins posed on the red carpet ahead of the event, smiling as they stood with mum and dad.

Esmé Annabelle Fox, 22

The Family ties the actor and his wife welcomed their youngest child, Esmé Annabelle Fox, on November 3, 2001.

While Esmé also stays out of the spotlight, Michael confirmed to PEOPLE in 2019 that his youngest daughter is moving out of the family home and going to college.

At a benefit for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the actor revealed the couple’s plans now that all their children have moved out.

“Our youngest is going to college, so we’ll be empty nesters, so … we’ll be traveling a bit!” He said.

While her social media accounts are set to private, Esmé often appears on her dad’s Instagram page.

“Today is #nationaldaughtersday and I have 3 amazing daughters,” Fox wrote alongside a photo of Esmé smiling for the camera as she stands between her two sisters, which he shared in September 2020.

In November 2021, Michael honored his daughter’s 20th birthday with an Instagram post that revealed her cute nickname: Ezzie. “20 years of joy,” he captioned the post. “Happy birthday Ezzie! You are a force of good in the universe. Thanks for that. I love you, Xoxo.”

In the photo, the father-daughter duo are both wearing hats from Duke University, where Esmé is currently a student, according to her LinkedIn.
