Michael Strahan takes a break from GMA to appear on DWTS in major judging panel shakeup

Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan is ready to embark on a new television journey. The 51-year-old took a temporary leave from GMA to grace another set, joining the judges of the renowned dance reality show.

ABC hired Michael to lend his charisma and judgment to Dancing with the Stars, where he will be part of the episode that decides the fate of the celebrity contestants.

GMA’s website made the announcement today, revealing that the former NFL superstar will be joining seasoned DWTS judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough.

Michael’s judging debut is set for DWTS’ Motown-themed night on Tuesday, October 10, adding a fresh perspective to the show’s 32nd season, which premiered on September 26.

The DWTS judging panel has evolved through the seasons. While Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli have remained constant, there have been several rotations.

Julianne Hough, a two-time DWTS champion as a professional dancer, graced the panel during seasons 19 to 21 and later from 23 to 24. Julianne’s departure in season 22 restored the trio of Len, Carrie and Bruno.

In Season 29, Julianne’s successful brother, Derek, replaced Len due to travel restrictions due to COVID-19 and Lena’s residence in the UK. Despite Len’s return the following season, Derek’s sense of judgment made him a mainstay.

The show suffered a significant loss with the departure of Len Goodman in April, following his discreet battle with bone cancer.

Speaking to Us Weekly following this sad event, Derek shared insights into the future of the panel. The show would continue with a three-person judging panel, with occasional spots for guest judges.

“I think that will be it. I think [they are] kind of realizing that three is the right amount,” he remarked.

Speaking of transformations, Julianne Hough’s journey has been noteworthy. From winning the DWTS title twice to judging and finally transitioning to hosting, her connection to the show is multi-faceted. Tom Bergeron and Lisa Canning were the first hosts, and Tom held that role until 2019.

After season 32, Tyra Banks, who faced a lot of scrutiny for replacing Tom, announced her departure from TMZ, revealing her intentions to pursue other projects. Tyra’s departure paved the way for Julianne to enter Season 32.

During its run, DWTS has seen various co-hosts such as Samantha Harris, Brooke Burke-Charvet, and Erin Andrews partnered with Tom.

However, the end of season 28 marked a changing of the guard as Tom and Erin left, giving way to Tyra Banks. In the beginning, Tyra took on the hosting responsibilities herself, and was later joined by DWTS winner actor Alfonso Ribeiro in the show’s 31st season.
