West Ham have raised just under £60,000 for the NHS and Air Ambulances UK Charity as a thank you for their support.

Antonio had an accident in Epping on his way home from the Hammers’ Rush Green training ground and underwent surgery on his broken leg that night.

All the Hammers players wore shirts with Antonio’s name on them after the home win over Wolves, the first game since the relegation.

Each of them, as well as the jerseys worn at the match, were signed and sold to fans at an auction to raise money.

The auction raised a total of £29,613 which was matched by West Ham’s board, making a total of £59,226 to be shared between the two causes.

Jarrod Bowen scored the winner for West Ham against Wolves and his shirt was the highest earner – selling for £3,005.

The Hammers captain said: “It has been special to see the West Ham family and the wider football community come together in support of Mic over the past month.

“We are all grateful for the care that both the NHS and Air Ambulances UK have given Mica during a challenging period for him and his family.

The incredible rise of Michail Antonio

The outpouring of love from the football community towards Michael Antonio was huge, and the forward was recognized as a great figure in the game.

The Wandsworth-born striker started from humble beginnings – playing for non-league side Tooting & Mitcham United.

After impressing in 2008, he was offered a trial at Reading – some five divisions up – and Alan Pardew duly snapped him up.

However, he later revealed that Tooting had kicked him out after refusing to sign a contract.

Antonio said: “I was kicked out because I refused to sign the contract.

“I said, ‘If someone steps in for me, I don’t want to be tied down. I want to be able to go, not to be appreciated by you.”

After spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, he was kicked out of the Championship in 2015 in a £7million deal with West Ham.

He’s been there ever since, winning the player of the year award, being named Premier League player of the month twice and lifting the European trophy.

Away from football, Antonio has bravely opened up about his mental health issues of late.

The Jamaica international was recently asked by Gary Lineker on the Rest is Football podcast what he would like to do when he retires from the game.

He revealed: “I want to be in entertainment.

“So, more in a league of its own, Play to the Whistle . . .”

“Being together in difficult times is what West Ham United is all about and on behalf of the team I want to thank everyone for helping us raise an incredible amount of money for two great causes.”

West Ham players and staff went to visit their team-mate while he was in hospital.

Antonio is now recovering at home and will not play again this season.

The Jamaican international, West Ham’s top scorer in the Premier League, is out of contract in the summer.

A decision has yet to be made on whether to extend his contract to cover his recovery, although discussions will take place in the near future.

West Ham previously extended Angelo Ogbonna’s contract following a knee injury at the end of the 2021 season.
