On Sunday in Sydney, England’s World Cup campaign reached the pinnacle of success as Spain beat the Lionesses 1-0. They could not have chosen a tougher opponent for their first World Cup final appearance since 1966 and the first for the women’s national team. A wily Spanish side controlled possession and consistently looked like they could outclass England’s defence.
Olga Carmona scored the first goal of the match as a result of a gorgeous counter. Spain won the ball back in the middle of the field as England tried to pass. Before the wonderful Caldentey, a quick change of play created space down England. Carmona was given time and space to shoot over English goalkeeper Mary Earps and into the bottom corner thanks to Oliver’s absence. Midway through the second half, Earps had her heroic moment when she canceled out Oliver’s penalty, keeping England’s hopes alive.
Just before the final whistle, England captain Millie Bright admitted the defeat would have an impact. It’s incredibly hard to accept, she noted. We did our best. We weren’t the best in the first half, but we improved in the second half. We had opportunities and hit the crossbar, but they were able to score because we lacked a crucial advantage. Bright went on to say that despite Carmona’s goal, they still believed that this would be their day.
“There was a lot of faith,” she said, “even though we were losing 1-0, we never gave up. Although it’s hard to accept, football. We are completely devastated. We did our best. Unfortunately, we were simply not present today.
“The girls were amazing,” she remarked. We received a lot of criticism, some lost confidence in us, but we never did. Soccer can sometimes work in your favor or against you. We participated in the final of the World Championship. We will cherish this day in a few weeks, but we want to win.
In an interview with the BBC, former Lioness Alex Scott praised Bright for her leadership, saying: “Stepping up where we’ve lost Leah Williamson and with the added pressure of coming to the World Cup when she’s been out injured for so long, but she’s led the team in every way .” Commenting on BBC 5 Live, former England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley echoed Bright’s sentiments: “I’m absolutely gutted for the Lions. During this tournament, especially in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, they improved a lot. However, we have to admit that Spain outplayed England today. It is a wonderful success for them. They deserve all the praise tonight.
