Ukrainian artist Oleg Shuplyak combines landscapes with famous faces
Shuplyak painted this painting in 2012. It is called “Spirit of Freedom”.
At first glance, viewers can see a gentleman playing a pandora, which is a Ukrainian musical instrument, sitting on a river bank.
But on closer inspection, the face of the Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko appears.
Shevchenko’s poems “Dream”, “Caucasus” and “The Epistle” are about Russia’s suppression of Ukraine.
Many of Shupljak’s paintings contain multiple living creatures and often have hidden meanings.
One of his paintings shows a woman’s face at first glance. But on closer inspection, her eyes and nose resemble those of a bird.
The bird’s legs and feet also serve as the woman’s mouth.
The bird depicted is a stork, which could represent positive things on the horizon for those astute enough to recognize it.
It is not the only Shupljak painting with a hidden genre.
One section features rolling hills in a rustic-looking landscape with storks flitting overhead and blending in with nature below.
Another of his paintings shows a winter environment with trees covered in snow.
But in reality it is an optical illusion of numerous storks running towards the sky.
