Mindy Kaling Jokes She Keeps Red Carpet Gowns So Her 2 Daughters Can ‘Fight Over Them’ When They Grow Up (Exclusive)

When Mindy Kaling started giving birth, her house became full – full of joy, full of laughter, full of baby screams and full of everything that children need.

And her own closet became a lot fuller because, unlike the days before she became a mom, she started keeping all her gorgeous red carpet dresses because she now had someone to give them to.

“Before I was like, ‘Well, I could never wear it again. So I don’t have to keep it,'” Kaling told PEOPLE at Sephoria, Sephora’s annual convention, in September. “Sometimes I would ask to keep them or buy them, but rarely.”

That all changed when she had her first daughter, Katherine “Kit,” 6, and was cemented when she welcomed another daughter, Anne, in February. She is also mother to son Spencer, 3.

“Now that I have two daughters, I literally thought they were going to be so annoyed that there were so many dresses I didn’t keep,” she joked. “So now I try harder.”

One dress she made sure to hold on to was her Gaurav Gupta dress from the 2024 Emmys. The shimmering black gown with sculptural shoulders made a statement on the carpet, and Kaling instantly fell in love with it — and knew she wanted to keep it for her girls.

“After the Emmys, I asked Gaurav Gupta, ‘Oh, do you think I could buy a dress?’ And he gave it to me, which is one of the most unexpected and generous things that never happens, it’s in a clean bag, vacuum sealed in my closet for them to fight over later.

Kaling also wore a dress by the Indian designer at this year’s Met Gala, and she called the dresses “book-makers” for her year because they were so contrasting in style and color. Her Met Gala dress was a voluminous cream number, while the Emmy dress was sleek and dark.

“Met Gala [dress] it was intentionally taking up space, and cream is a shade I don’t usually wear,” she told PEOPLE exclusively, noting that the Emmys dress was more her speed. “He’s just so talented, and I loved being able to show different things which you can do [on a red carpet].”

Kaling said eldest daughter Kit may be ready to follow in her modern mom’s footsteps — and she already has plenty of opinions on what’s popular and what’s not.

“She has a really specific vision of what she thinks is beautiful and what’s not,” Kaling said. “[A dress is] it’s not glamorous unless it touches the ground. I think it’s because you’re not allowed to wear evening gowns in first class. So it’s like forbidden. So when I go out, if I’m only wearing a minidress, she says, ‘It doesn’t touch the ground. It’s not nice.’ So she has a lot of strong opinions.”
