Welcome to The Blueprint, where we take apart the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and recreate them, piece by piece.
If the Jonas Brothers saw Mindy Kaling’s Instagram post, they might have the same reaction I did — sing “High heels, red dress” from their song “Burnin’ Up.”
Office the actress, 45, shared a carousel of pictures earlier this week with the caption, “Please take my tooth!!” I will actually not i’ll do that but i’m taking note of her red dress which was stunningly stunning. And because Kaling knew people (aka me) would want to know where it’s from, she tagged the brand, Astr the Label, in her post.
Her flattering square-neck style is $99 and was the perfect summation of everything I look for this time of year. The thin straps were obviously breathable both on their own and under a drop-resistant jacket, while the midi length works for now, but also adds to its longevity.

For $49 less, this maxi dress from Anrabess has all the qualities that made me fall in love with Kaling’s dress in the first place. I’ve found that the square necklines are really flattering and dramatically reduce my chances of having a bra-showing mistake or accident, and the flowy bottom looks like it would flatter bodies of all shapes and sizes. And the in-between length is good for dressing between seasons and beyond.
And I already have at least two different styling ideas for fall and even the holidays: shopping trips might involve a white button-up and some matching sneakers, while on cooler days I might layer up with black leggings and a matching sweater.

It doesn’t get too cold where I live, but I grew up in Chicago, so I know midis might not fly as it gets deeper into fall. In this case, a maxi dress is like a more modern version of a wearable blanket. Customers say this one is “very comfortable” and “light and airy,” which is still important for where we are now.
“Personally, I like ribbons that you can tie and adjust [according] for your comfort, which makes the dress even more unique,” said one customer.

Like the song, Kaling seems to have gone the high heels route. There is nothing wrong with that, but they are not compatible with my lifestyle. I like flat shoes because a) I’m already tall and b) they’re softer on the feet. This pair has two straps and they’re under $30, so I won’t feel bad when I inevitably wear them.
