Miranda Lambert’s upcoming album features a writing credit from a very special person: her husband, Brendan McLoughlin!

Lambert is set to release her latest record, Postcards from TexasSeptember 13. But she has already released a handful of songs from the album, including “Dammit Randy,” on which McLoughlin is credited as a co-writer.

In a new interview on the Bunnie Xo podcast Stupid blondeLambert, 40, opened up about involving McLoughlin, 32, in her creative process and explained that they first started playing together during the COVID quarantine.

“Everybody was at home, they were bored, and I’m a songwriter, so I said, ‘Let’s write songs!’ And so he said, ‘I don’t know how to write songs,'” she recalled. “And I said, ‘Yes, you can, you can do it.’ So I took out the guitar, we started writing, and he’s actually really good. Like he has really good sentences. I mean, being a New York cop, he’s lived enough life to like, he’s got some good words here.”

The “If I Was a Cowboy” singer said she and McLoughlin, who married in January 2019, worked on about four or five “little songs” together — which was enough to boost McLoughlin’s confidence. Soon he was bragging to their friend Jesse Frasure that writing was “easy” – and so Frasure dragged him into a four-and-a-half-hour writing session.

The three-time Grammy winner said McLoughlin quickly realized songwriting was no picnic. But how did Lambert start working on Postcards from Texasand her co-producer Jon Randall realized they might be able to put McLoughlin to work one more time.

“We kind of started talking about leaving Sony and signing with a new record label, and really just talking about a situation that no longer serves you, and moving on from that and what kind of fire does that light under you,” Lambert said of her conversation with Randall. “Jon Randall is a friend of mine, but his name is actually Randy, so we always call him ‘Damn Randy.’ And so we started writing this song and Brendan kept coming up while he was watching football. I asked myself, ‘Are we doing this? In or out? You will need to turn off the game. Pick a side.’”

McLoughlin, a retired New York City police officer, decided to do so and was soon sitting at the table next to Randall and his wife. What emerged from the session was “Dammit Randy,” a track from the new album Lambert released in late July, along with “Alimony” and “Wranglers.”

“He wrote some of the best lines in the song,” she said. “It was actually really special, because the situation that I wrote the song about, Brendan is my husband, so he had to listen to me for so long about it, that he kind of knew the story better than I did, you know? So he had the same emotions as me and that’s why I’m really proud of him.”

“I thought, ‘I want to play you something.’ And so the whole band knew he wrote it, so we’re all just staring at him, and we’re like, ‘Push play,'” she recalled. “He won’t say it, but his eyes got a little misty. He said, ‘You cut my a song?’ It was great. And it’s one of my favorites on the album.”

Lambert and McLoughlin married just three months after meeting on set Good morning Americawhere she performed and he worked in insurance.

She told PEOPLE in May that one of the couple’s main rules is about “communication.”

“We just talk about it, whatever it is, we talk about everything,” Lambert said. “And I think communication is very important, especially because as women, we expect men to know what we’re thinking, and they don’t. We have to tell them.”
