Missing Dog Belonging to Cancer Survivor Found After Week Lost in Extreme Cold in Canada

A beloved Basset Hound has been found alive after a week lost on the icy streets of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

As CTV reported, the 15-month-old dog, named Gus, wandered outside his home in freezing temperatures.

When his owner, Teresa Nisperos, realized that the dog had run away, she followed him barefoot.

“Knowing that he’s never been outside and he’s not used to seeing a lot of people or even other dogs, my heart just sank. And I said, ‘Oh my God, the immediate thought was, ‘Is he going to get hit? Is he going to get hit? steal? What about the cold?” I was immediately devastated,” she told the network.

Owner traveled 1,800 miles to reunite with puppy missing for 17 days: ‘Pets are real family’

Nisperos, an immunocompromised cancer survivor, put out a plea on Facebook for help finding Gus after he had been missing for about 12 hours.

Neighbors mobilized for Nisperos and some dogs were seen, but the search was ultimately unsuccessful. So Gus’s owner made a second plea for help on the sixth day when her pet went missing.

After a week, Gus was spotted in a rural area, and Nisperos traveled to where he was to lure him into her safe arms.

“We’re from the Philippines, so we don’t have family here, and when everyone rallied around us and behind us and found Gus, we felt like we had our families back home here in Canada,” Nisperos told CTV.

After the ordeal, Gus was taken to the vet for evaluation. Nisperos said he had lesions on his nose, but otherwise his medical team was surprised he was doing well after spending a week in the cold.
