Thanks to MLB player Justin Turner (and the rest of the Dodgers), a baseball fan is engaged!
A man named Roland Au took to Xu (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, December 23, to thank the former Dodgers fan favorite for playing a major role in his love story. Unbeknownst to Turner, had his exit from the house not happened in 2017, Au may never have met his fiancée.
“On October 15, 2017, I watched your walk-off in NLCS Game 2 at my home at Lafayette College,” Au began, referring to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) game between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
He continued: “I went so crazy that my downstairs neighbor thought I was being attacked and came running. We started talking and seven years later we’re engaged. It started with you leaving.”
At the time, Turner’s three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Dodgers a 4-1 victory over the Cubs and a 2-0 lead in the NLCS.
Turner read Au’s story, which included a sweet photo of the newly engaged couple, and decided to respond.
“Wow….You’re welcome!!! Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉,” he wrote late on the evening of December 23, retweeting the post.

Au’s announcement comes shortly after Turner responded to ESPN’s Jeff Passan’s Dec. 21 tweet disparagement, in which he announced who he thought were the best free agents at the first base position still available. Passan listed the first basemen who recently secured contracts and highlighted the standout players still on the market, but left Turner off the list.
In response, Turner posted a GIF of himself from his time with the Boston Red Sox saying “wow.”
