Mohammed Afsal became well known to the public after winning the first Asian Schools Athletics Championships in 2013 in Khao Tun, Pahang, Malaysia. He led the Indian student team to participate in the competition. In the post-match interview, Afsal thanked his coach PG Manoj (Parli School coach) and said:
Even though Rahul and the Malaysian were ahead of me, I didn’t foresee any trouble. I just followed the strategy. I know there is room for improvement. I hope to be able to compete in the World Juniors next year. ”
Afsal then participated in the state championships, inter-state championships, the 2015 Thiruvananthapuram National Games, etc. and won multiple medals.
