Mom Feuds with Sister for Demanding Over $20 After Niece Ate Two Slices of Two-Week-Old Cake

A single mother whose teenage daughter babysits for the family encountered an embarrassing and unusual mix-up that left her wondering if she had made a mistake.

The original poster (OP) is a 38-year-old mom of a 17-year-old teenager she calls Carly. Carly babysits her aunt (OP’s sister), who lives nearby with her 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter.

“Carly sometimes babysits her cousins ​​on weekends so my sister and BIL can go out, usually for 3-4 hours. In exchange, my sister gives her 30-40 euros in cash,” the OP explained on Reddit’s AmITheA- —– panel.

“Me and my sister don’t make Carly babysit; she volunteers it. She likes having extra money to fund her Starbucks addiction without working part-time in fast food or retail, and the kids love to see her,” she noted. . “I’m glad she’s learned responsibility. I think it’s an overall win.”

The deal was going smoothly until a recent incident confused the OP.

“Couple [of] hours after Carly comes home from babysitting, my sister calls me. It was my niece’s birthday two weeks ago and there was some leftover birthday cake in their kitchen,” OP said.

“It was a specially made fancy lemon curd cake and I remember at the party a lot of kids didn’t want to eat it so there was a lot left over. While she was babysitting Carly ate two slices.”

OP’s sister was not happy that Carly helped herself to the cake. “My sister said she should have asked before she helped herself to the cake, and that it was expensive. I apologized to my sister and told her I would talk to my daughter.”

Just as the OP thought that was the end of it, her sister continued, “She mentioned again that the cake was custom made and expensive and said we should reimburse her.”

“At first I honestly thought she wasn’t serious, but she wanted me to give her money for the cake. I mentioned that the cake would surely spoil soon if it wasn’t stale already (I said this lightly – from the bottom of my heart, trying to lighten the mood), but she made it clear know that I’m NOT giving her money,” she explained. “She says she paid 70 euros for the cake and expects me to give her 20 euros. I told her I don’t do that.”

“My sister says I’m inconsiderate and my daughter ate the slices without permission. I feel like she’s being petty, and what difference would it make if it was all eaten last weekend or at a birthday party?”

When asked if she made a mistake, several commenters asked for more information, at which point the OP revealed that the cake “wasn’t frozen, it was kept in a bread pan.”

“The cake was kept at room temperature in a bread box on the worktop. After two weeks it was no longer even a viable edible product, let alone one with monetary value,” said one commenter. “Your daughter is lucky she didn’t get food poisoning.”
