Monica Says Reuniting with Brandy on Ariana Grande's 'The Boy Is Mine' Remix Helped Heal Their Relationship

Monica is grateful to Ariana Grande for reuniting her with an old friend.

In an interview with Party tonightThe 43-year-old “For You I Will” musician opened up about working on a remix of the pop star’s hit, “The Boy Is Mine” — which was released on Friday, June 21 and inspired by her and Brandy’s 1998 collaboration of the same name — helped to heal their relationship after years of alleged strife between them.

“The process of the new collaboration bridged the gaps a lot,” Monica said of building a bridge with the “Missing You” artist, 45. “When you communicate properly, you can find not only solutions and solutions to problems — but sometimes you find that there was no problem at all, just consistent miscommunication.”

She added: “It was a lot easier just to talk.”

Monica said she and Brandy have talked more in the past few weeks than they have in “the last two decades.”

“We recognized that it was crucial to keep other people out of our relationship, business and personal, and let it be between her and me, and that changed everything. It changed the trajectory entirely,” she told the outlet. “My son was in the hospital the other day and I talked to her while he was there – that’s what Ariana did without maybe even realizing it.”

Monica added, “But this time I thank God for the growth and change and for becoming a mom and for experiencing a lot of what I have and for learning to communicate properly.”

While the original version of “The Boy Is Mine” was a hit, it also fueled rumors of a feud between the two.

2020 Monica and Brandy also spoke with ET after theirs Versus fight to discuss their strained relationship.

“It’s not something I would say is anybody’s fault,” the “Angel of Mine” singer said. “We were all adding to it and after a while it became real.”

Monica continued: “It’s over now. And it took a very grown-up conversation. There’s no shame in saying that. We had to get to that place and that moment that we had, that allowed us to sit here today. That had to happen first. ”

The visual for “The Boy Is Mine,” released Friday, June 7, begins with the “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” hitmaker watching the news of a rat infestation in town on TV before cutting to Monica and Brandy which introduce the mayor’s report.
