More than 180 People on Royal Caribbean Cruise Fell Ill After Salmonella Outbreak

Passengers and crew aboard Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas on the ship fell ill with a gastrointestinal illness following an outbreak of salmonella.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 180 of the 2,172 passengers and three of the 894 crew members on the trip were infected with the disease. Their primary symptoms were diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache and muscle aches.

The CDC said on its website that Royal Caribbean International and the crew reported taking measures such as notifying those on board of the outbreak, encouraging good hygiene and increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures.

Crew members also reported collecting stool samples from people who had gastrointestinal illnesses for testing.

The CDC also said its Vessel Recovery Program (VSP) is remotely monitoring the situation and reviewing the ship’s response to the outbreak.

The cruise traveled from Vancouver to Alaska between September 20 and 27.

The salmonella outbreak is the tenth case of gastrointestinal illness on cruises that the CDC has documented in 2024. Of the other nine, seven were caused by norovirus, one was E. coli, and the other was unknown.

Earlier in September, more than 100 people traveled on P&O Cruises’ Arcadia the ship became ill during a norovirus outbreak.

The CDC reported that 128 of the 1,959 passengers and 19 of the 799 crew members became ill on the month-long voyage that departed on September 3, with vomiting and diarrhea as their main symptoms.
