N. Valarmathi (1959-2023) was an Indian scientist and project director of RISAT-1, India’s first indigenously developed radar imaging satellite.

She has participated in several launch countdowns at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. Her last mission before her death was Chandrayaan-3 in 2023, India’s third lunar mission.

Facts / Trivia
- In 2015, she became the first recipient of the Abdul Kalam Award awarded by the Tamil Nadu government in memory of late President Abdul Kamal. The award was given in recognition of her contribution during the successful launch of the radar imaging satellite RISAT-1 in 2012. Ms. Valarmathi received a certificate worth Rs 100 at the Independence Day function held at Fort St. George in 2016. Five hundred thousand rupees and eight grams of gold coins. Ms Jayalalithaa announced the award in memory of former President Abdul Kalam.
- Valarmathi is the second woman Satellite Program Director of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), having led a prestigious project ‘PSLV-C19-RISAT-1 Mission’ in 2012. She also became the first woman to lead a long-range satellite program. Sensing satellite project.
