Inauguration of Nagaland Medical College
Nagaland Medical College: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the first medical college in Nagaland on Saturday, October 14, 2023. The Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) was inaugurated in the capital Kohima where the event was attended by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio .
Other dignitaries present at the event included Deputy CM TR Zeliang, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare P Paiwang Konyak, senior officials of the Nagaland government, civil society members and others.
The medical college is affiliated to Nagaland University and offers 100 MBBS seats, of which 85 are for students from Nagaland and 15 for students from across the country. A total of 85 students from the state and six from across the country were admitted to the NIMSR MBBS program after the induction program conducted last month.

Addressing the event, the Union Health Minister said that NIMSR is not only a medical college but also a research institute which fulfills the purpose of imparting medical education and solving the health problems of the Naga people.
Highlighting the central government’s commitment to improving Nagaland’s medical education, the minister said that MBBS seats in the state have increased from 64,000 to 160,000 over the past nine years. The minister also encouraged students and other stakeholders not to limit their scope of research within national borders by encouraging students to take advantage of opportunities from abroad.
The minister also informed that the government has started foreign language courses in medical colleges so that students have an advantage in employment abroad. He further added that strengthening medical, nursing and pharmaceutical education in the country is the government’s effort for the comprehensive development and expansion of the health sector.
He pointed out that the government’s aim is to ensure that the country has access to affordable healthcare, particularly highlighting the expansion of Jan Aushadhi Kendras where medicines are provided at a subsidized cost.
