Nancy Carol Fitzgerald was born in Essex County, New Jersey, where she grew up. She was born to her mother and father in 1956. Her father died in 1968. She had a sister named Kathleen (Unterberger).
She moved with her mother and siblings from Crown Street to Mohr Avenue in Bloomfield where she attended Bloomfield’s Berkeley Elementary School and North High School.
She was dismissed from school due to drug use at an early age. One person gave her and other girls drugs in exchange for prostitution.
She took an overdose of drugs, which is why the police rushed her to the hospital in 1971. After the help, when she was taken to the home, the police found barbiturates in her bedroom that she was supposed to sell.
When she was sharing Easter dinner with her family at her home in Bloomfield on April 2, 1972. A day later, she disappeared on April 3, 1972 at the age of 16.
When Nancy went missing, she was wearing knee-high socks, a bra with lace material and leather platform sandals with an ankle strap. She had a crack in her upper central incisors for which she received dental care.
A year after her disappearance, her friend received a call from a girl begging and screaming for help and saying:
“Mom, I made a big mistake. Come for me, come for me, help.”
Nancy’s mother thought she was Nancy because Kathleen came home safe that night. Nancy’s sister Kathleen traveled the country looking for Nancy.
The remains of a young female were found on December 10, 1988, on a hillside where a bicycle path had been built. After an investigation, authorities found a skeleton along with pieces of clothing and shoes, but were not sure the skeleton belonged to Nancy.
Police said this young family has been at the scene for as many as 15 years.
Using Bode 2020 technology, Dr. Lauren Thoma examined and officially identified the remains as belonging to Nancy. Still, Nancy’s burial is awaited.
But it is still a mystery to all of us how she died and who killed her.
