Narendra Giri is one of the most respected Hindu religious leaders in India and was awarded the title of Mahant. Giri was twice elected as the national president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), the highest decision-making body of the Akharas of India’s 13 recognized Hindu monasteries. He is the secretary of Panchayati Akhara Shri Niranjani and the Mahant of Baghambari Gaddi and Bade Hanuman temples in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The saint died after committing suicide. His death sent shockwaves across the country and he was investigated by an 18-member SIT team of the Uttar Pradesh police and later by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Narendra Giri hailed from the trans-Gangetic region of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh; however, his early life remains a mystery. There is no exact information about his age. Some sources claim that the prophet was born in 1959 (age 62; time of death), while according to others he was born in 1949 (age 72; time of death).

Narendra Giri is one of the most revered and learned saints among Indian seers and sadhus. Giri held many offices during his priesthood. He served as secretary of Shri Panchayati Akhara Niranjani, one of the ancient monasteries in India. He also remains the Mahant of the Baghambari Gaddi and Bade Hanuman temples in Prayagraj. This incident led Anand to accuse his guru of the sale of Bagombari Mutt’s properties and other financial irregularities in the monastery. In September 2019, Mahant, who condemned the actions of Swami Chinmayanand on behalf of the Ahara diocese, said in a statement that his people wanted a “fair trial without any prejudice” in the case. Apparently, he also considered expelling Chinmayanand. However, a month later in October, the Akhara Paris chief changed his attitude and issued a statement in support of Chinmayanand. Giri claimed that Swamy was wrongly implicated in the extortion case and the sexual harassment allegations against Swamy were a conspiracy. Mahant Giri said in a statement,

We will now announce our support for Chinmayanand at ABAP’s Haridwar conference. He has the ability to handle the matter from a legal perspective, but we will continue to support him socially. “

The top seer died under mysterious circumstances in his room and police recovered an alleged suicide note in which Mahant blamed his suicide on his chief disciple Anand Giri and two others – Badhanu Mahant of Man Temple and his sons Aditya Tiwari, Sandeep Tiwari. Mahant Giri wrote in his notes:

I lived with dignity and couldn’t stand the insult, that’s why I committed suicide. “

The police also revealed that the note stated that Mahant was forced to commit suicide because he was “blackmailed” by Anand Giri over a “morphed photo with a girl”. Giri wrote in his notes:

I knew that Anand Giri was going to share with the public a morphed photo showing me and a girl. Anand asked me, once these accusations get out, how many people will you prove your innocence to? I live a dignified life and I cannot bear the humiliation I am about to suffer…”

Narendra Giri also named in the note the successor of the Mahant of Bagambali Gadhi – Balber Giri, who was one of his disciples. According to police, the suicide note also mentioned Mahant’s suicide on September 13, but he did not commit suicide. Two days after Mahant’s death, police reportedly revealed that Giri had ordered celphos, a pill they found at the scene of the alleged suicide. The report also stated that it was unclear whether Mahant ordered the poison for himself or for other reasons.

After the death of Mahant Giri on September 23, Niranjani Akhara leader Kailashanand Giri delayed the appointment of his successor Balbeer Giri as Mahant of Baghambari Gaddi Mutt and Bade Hanuman Mandir of Prayagraj on the grounds that the alleged suicide note was fake.
