Nargis was born Fatima Rashid on June 1, 1929 in Kolkata (West Bengal). After some time, her family moved to Allahabad from West Bengal.
Her mother was a classical singer who introduced Nargis into the world of films. Although Nargis’ dream was to become a doctor, as per her mother’s wishes, she decided to pursue a career in the Indian film industry. Due to her extraordinary beauty and extraordinary talent, her movies have broken the historical records of the big screen and touched the heights of the sky.

She went to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York for treatment. But the disease was incurable and she was brought back to India and admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
On May 2, 1981, she fell into a coma and lost all hope of life. On May 3, 1981, this great Bollywood actress bid farewell to this mortal world forever. When Nargis’ body was buried at Badakabala Stan, Bombay Marine Corps, the place was renamed ‘Nargis Dutt Road’ in her honor.
She longed to see her son on screen, but Sanjay’s debut film Rocky was released on May 7, 1981, just four days after her death.

Her father, Mohanchand Uttamchand Tyagi, was a wealthy Hindu Brahmin from Rawalpindi, Punjab (now part of Pakistan), who later converted to Islam and took the name Abdul Rashid. Her mother Jaidambai is an Indian classical singer.
