Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton’s Relationship Timeline

Like Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton Stranger Things characters fell in love in 1984 Hawkins, their off-screen romance also began to blossom.

Dyer and Heaton first met when they were cast as Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers on the Netflix series, and fans couldn’t help but notice their chemistry when the show premiered in July 2016.

A few months after the announcement, fans began to speculate that the two actors were a couple in real life. The couple fueled even more dating rumors in 2017 when they were spotted together at Los Angeles International Airport after attending the Golden Globes.

At the beginning of their relationship, Dyer and Heaton did their best to keep their romance under wraps, which Heaton later discussed in an interview with GQ.

“We didn’t really know what the relationship was,” he told the paper. “The causation, in any case, may have been unnecessary.”

The couple has opened up a bit more in the years since, attending red carpet premieres and sharing sweet posts with each other on social media.

September 2015: Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton meet on set Stranger Things

Dyer and Heaton first met on the set of the hit Netflix series in 2015. When viewers first met Dyer’s character Nancy Wheeler, she was in a bit of a love triangle with Heaton’s character, Jonathan Byers, and the likable Steve Harrington, played by author Joe Keery. However, the chemistry between Dyer and Heaton was so strong that by the end of the season, fans were rooting for them to end up together, both on and off screen.

Apparently, the duo had chemistry before they even got their roles. Matt Duffer, co-creator of the series, told GQ in an interview, “At that first audition, we read chemistry [Heaton and] Natalia, and sparks flew.”

1st season Stranger Things debuted on Netflix on July 15, 2016, and the show’s instant success made Dyer and Heaton, then 21 and 22, instant household names along with the rest of the cast.

Dyer later spoke about how the show’s massive popularity influenced the young cast during an interview in 2020. The Independent.

“Nobody had any idea how successful the show would be,” she said. “There was no preparation – there couldn’t have been, even if we had known. It was a surprising and overwhelming shock. Then it was like, ‘OK, this is how it is now.’ ”

A few days after Dyer first appeared on Heaton’s Instagram, she returned the favor and uploaded a picture of the actor to her account. Dyer posted a solo shot of Heaton with multiple birds resting on his shoulders with the caption: “Wow congrats to @charlie.r.heaton on his new one man show Stranger Wings!! I’ll sure miss you s2 but happy you’re doing what you do love🙏🐦❤️”

With two friends, Dyer and Heaton dressed as the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow, respectively, from Wizard of Oz for Halloween 2016. Although it was a group costume and they weren’t posing next to each other, fans enjoyed watching the on-screen couple spend time together, and immediately began speculating if they were an item.

January 13, 2018: Charlie Heaton sends birthday love to Natalia Dyer

Heaton celebrated Dyer’s 23rd birthday by posting a sweet photo of the actress holding a piece of cake. He captioned the image: “Happy 21st birthday! @nattyiceofficial. I hope it’s great and I’m thrilled to be working on this new series with you. I think it’s going to be great. 🎂🎉🥂🙏🏻 PS – I’m not feeling too well , but I still want to meet you at Piedmont Park tonight x.”

Dyer later explained to PopSugar that the birthday wish and caption were an inside joke.

Despite tabloid reports that the couple had broken up, Dyer and Heaton looked cozy at the Dior event in LA as they posed for photos together.

Together with Riverdale stars Camila Mendes, Vanessa Morgan and Hart Denton, the couple attended an after party in Palm Springs during the annual Coachella music festival. Dyer posted a fun video of the group in a photo booth on Instagram.

Dyer had the support of her boyfriend at the premiere of her film Velvet Buzzsaw. The couple appeared in matching white floral combinations on the red carpet for the screening.

“Yeah, because there are times when you’re stressed. Because we’re in the same industry and have had similar trajectories, we’ve been through it together,” he said.

Heaton also added that working in the same field helped bring the pair closer. “They understand something that maybe no one else would. You go into high-pressure situations together, but you can share those insecurities or whatever they are,” he explained.

While speaking with Refinery29, Dyer said she prefers to keep her personal life private, but did give some insight into what it’s like working “long days” with her significant other on set.

“It’s always a lot of fun. We’re really comfortable with each other, so we can play and feel more free, and we can talk about it before,” she said. “There’s that feeling of who knows if you’ll ever work with this person again? Who knows? This could be your only chance to play like this.”
