“Within 10 minutes, I wanted to create a life and a family with him,” he told PEOPLE in 2022. “And that was the first time I really believed that we could and that I could. He was the first person who made me feel enough sure to say, ‘Okay, we can do this together’.”

Both children were born via a surrogate, and the fathers are proud of their “beautiful” path to fatherhood.

“Jeremiah and I are thrilled to announce the arrival of our daughter, Poppy Brent-Berkus, born via surrogate on March 23, 2015,” Berkus wrote in a Facebook post at the time. “We are so excited to finally be a family of three! As anyone with a newborn knows, we have our work cut out for us, but we couldn’t be happier to embark on this life-changing journey that is parenthood.”

Poppy lived in both Los Angeles and New York, and she developed a wonderful habit of flying by plane from an early age.

“Poppy likes to see who else is traveling, to say hello to people [on the plane]. She’s very social,” Berkus told PEOPLE in 2018.

Adding that it’s “super easy” to travel with, the designer said: “All you need to do is download 20 episodes of Peppa Pig and you’re good to go. She traveled a lot with us; she is not crazy about the world, but she has been to Mexico a couple of times. She loves traveling.”

Speaking of their decision to buy back their former penthouse in Greenwich Village, it was something that felt right for the family.

“I think it’s a big decision as a family to leave California and bring the kids back to the West Village in New York,” Berkus said during a promotional clip for HGTV’s second season. Nate and Jeremiah’s house project. “Basically, everything in our lives is within a five-block radius — our kids’ schools, our home, our design offices.”

In February 2023, Poppy’s creativity was stimulated by a visit to New York Fashion Week. The bride was with Brent at the Christian Siriano fashion show, and she released her designer genes in the center.

The designer’s son, Oskar Michael, was born via surrogate on March 26, 2018, in Los Angeles.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Berkus and Brent revealed the honest meaning behind their son’s name. Oskar was named after Berkus’ former partner, Fernando Bengoechea, who tragically died in the tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004.

“His middle name was Oskar,” Berkus told PEOPLE shortly after his birth — adding that the tribute was “actually Jeremiah’s idea.”

“We have always respected the memory of Fernando in our relationship. He’s part of our love story,” explained Brent. “It’s such an important chapter in Nate’s life. So the idea of being able to honor his memory in a beautiful way was exciting for us.”

According to the couple, Poppy was very excited to welcome a sibling and stepped into the big sister role with ease.

“We always thought she’d be cute, but we never thought she’d be this kind and caring,” Brent told All the Moms shortly after Oskar’s birth in 2018. “She’s pretty adorable.”

The two children have very different personalities and their fathers can’t get enough of them.

“They’re very different, but they’re both the sweetest people we’ve ever met,” Brent once told PEOPLE. “We laugh, Nate and I, all the time. I wonder, ‘What would it be like to grow up with two parents who tell you they love you 37 times a day?’ ”

“The truth is Poppy is a born nurturer. She’s done this a million times. She’s an old soul,” he continued. “And Oskar is just like a walking sugar bear, a cuddler. He’s really empathetic and sweet, very sensitive. He’s got enough… He’s a bit mischievous, which is fine.”

– But they are simply great – added the proud dad. “We were so lucky that these great kids chose us.”
