Naveen Patnaik is an Indian politician. He is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha. He is also the founder of the Biju Janta Dal (BJD) political party; he is named after his father.

Naveen Patnaik was born on 16 October 1946 in Cuttack, Odisha (age 77 in 2023). His zodiac sign is Libra. He was educated at Wareham Boys School, Dehradun and Doon School, Dehradun. His favorite subject in school was art, and he loved oil painting. He pursued his Bachelor of Arts degree from Kirori Mal College, New Delhi. After graduation, he went on to become a writer. From 1985 to 1993, he wrote four books. During this period, he met former US first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis during her visit to India in 1983. He also wrote two books with her and they were very good friends. She even edited one of Navin’s books. He loves traveling and often travels around the world. He spent most of his youth in Orissa and traveled extensively until he was 50 years old.

In 1965, he and a friend opened a clothing boutique called Psychedelhi at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi. His clients include members of the legendary rock band The Beatles, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Paul McCartney and other celebrities. He was awarded a project to supply designer clothing to a London boutique.

He entered politics in 1997 after the death of his father Biju Patnaik. His father is a member of the BJP and the party wants Biju’s children to represent the party and contest elections from Biju Patnaik seat. After Navin’s brother and sister reject the opportunity, Navin asks for their permission and agrees to participate in the election. He joined the PPP and won. He was elected as a Member of Parliament and appointed as the Union Minister of Mines in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. After the disbandment of the BJP in 1998, Naveen formed his own party and named it after his father, Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Naveen Patnaik entered politics only after his father’s death in 1997. Biju Patnaik is the former Chief Minister of Odisha. It is very important for the BJP to retain Biju Patnaik’s seat and hence they approach Biju Patnaik’s children. Prem and Geeta declined an invitation to contest from their father’s seat. Slowly, after consulting and seeking permission from his siblings, Naveen agreed to contest from his father’s seat. He joined the People’s Party in 1997 and won the 1998 general election. He was appointed as a cabinet minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government.

After the disbandment of the BJP in 1998, he formed his own party, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). In 2000, he contested the Orissa assembly elections and his party won in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On March 5, 2000, he resigned as federal mining minister and was sworn in as the chief minister of Odisha. He has since served as the chief minister of Odisha. He is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha. In the 2019 Odisha Assembly elections, he emerged as the winner and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha for a fifth term. On May 29, 2019, Naveen Patnaik was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha for the fifth time.

He contested from Kantabanj seat in the 2024 Odisha assembly elections but lost to Laxman Bag of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It was the first electoral defeat in his career. On June 5, 2024, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Odisha.

  • In 2013, Naveen Patnaik was recognized and appreciated by the United Nations body for gender equality and women’s empowerment for supporting 33% women in the General Assembly.
  • The United Nations has expressed its appreciation and congratulations to Naveen Patnaik for effectively executing a zero-casualty mission during Cyclone Phailin. He was praised nationally for his organized handling of hurricane-ravaged areas without causing any injuries. The United Nations Disaster Management Entity has awarded Odisha the title of ‘Best Disaster Management State’; making Odisha the first Southeast Asian state to receive this honor.

  • On March 8, 2009, the BJD withdrew from the BJP alliance. The BJP came up with many solutions, but the alliance ended. The BJP accused Naveen Patnaik of quitting as his demands were not met and that he deliberately proposed illogical seat allocation ratios.
