Nelly Furtado Thinks 20- and 30-Somethings Are ‘Experimenting Too Much’ with Skin: ‘Take a Deep Breath’ (Exclusive)

Nelly Furtado, who has made headlines for her youthful looks since re-emerging into the limelight, said she worries younger generations are too focused on “trendy” beauty treatments.

“I think less is more and I think that’s an important message because I think there’s too much experimentation with people in their 20s and 30s,” Furtado, a 45-year-old mother of one, told PEOPLE in an October interview. “I think they’re experimenting too much with their skin, with the new trendy things that are coming out.”

She encourages you to consider popular treatments: “Really at the end of the day, I think we need to take a deep breath and not just jump on the latest skin care trend.”

The “Keep Going Up” singer spoke to PEOPLE as part of her SKIMS “Best of SKIMS” campaign, and revealed her own approach to getting that youthful glow — something that only requires “crazy amounts of water” and lots of sleep.

That routine has been consistent for the past 25 years, Furtado said.

“I’ve had pretty much the same skincare routine since I was 20, which is just cleansing my face and then exfoliating my face,” she said.

There are other things, like limiting alcohol intake.

“I treat alcohol as a holiday thing, maybe for a birthday or something, but I don’t make it part of my regular routine because I find it really dehydrates me and makes me tired,” she told PEOPLE.

Furtado just released a new collaboration with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake earlier this year. “Keep Going Up” is the trio’s first collaboration in 16 years, after “Give It to Me” from 2007.

The song is just part of Furtado’s new embrace of life. “I’m leaning a lot more. I’m leaning into what I do for a living and finally realizing, 23 years later, I’m really good at this. I love being on stage. I love writing songs. I love spreading joy,” she said.
