Nessa Barrett Says She's in Recovery After Comments About Her Weight 'Manifested in My Eating Disorder'

Nessa Barrett gets candid about her health.

A few days after the release of her second album Aftercare, The 22-year-old musician responded to comments about her weight and appearance in a lengthy video posted on TikTok.

Barrett – who has often been open about her mental health, including issues with ADHD, borderline personality disorder (BPD) and an eating disorder – attributes her recent weight loss to “stress and anxiety”.

“I’ve been dealing with a tremendous amount of hate for about six months now. I was coming off an album. I was so stressed and anxious the whole time I started losing weight, and then everyone started commenting on it,” Barrett said in a clip posted to Tuesday, November 19.

The “traveling princess” said the comments about her appearance “manifested in my eating disorder”, causing “everyone around me and everyone who loves me” to “push” her to recovery.

“I’m on the mend. I’m getting better,” Barrett continued. “I’ve been recovering for two weeks and everyone keeps commenting on how sick I am. This shit– it takes time, and there will be times– I’ll deal with it for the rest of my life, so stop talking about it whenever I start fighting again. That is simply life.”

The contractor, who said Nylon in a 2022 interview that her eating disorder began when she was in high school, she said she appreciates fans commenting on her weight out of “concern and love” but that others are “completely rude and ignorant”.

“How can you expect anyone to get better when this is constantly being thrown in your face? Let’s stop guessing, maybe, and leave me alone. Also, I’m 22. I’ve got my s–” she realized, like I could to fend for myself,” Barrett continued in her video, adding that she’s “sick of being treated like a baby.”

“I’m fine, and I’m on the mend, and all the fucking stupid comments about how fucking different I look. Yeah, the weights will do that to you. Oh, I’m growing up, and, yeah, I fixed my fucking nose.

Barrett ended the clip by declaring that she’s loving her life right now after “struggling with my weight for a hot minute.”

Earlier in the video, she also denied claims that her weight loss was the result of drug use, explaining, “I don’t touch that shit– and I don’t surround myself with people who touch that shit–.” She further added that the only medications she takes are mood stabilizers and “occasionally” ADHD medications.
