New Year's Eve Revelers Get Drenched in Times Square Waiting for the Ball Drop amid the Rain — with No Umbrellas Allowed!

Not even a thunderstorm could stop New Year’s Eve parties in Times Square from waiting for the ball to drop.

On Tuesday, December 31, thousands of people gathered in Times Square in New York to see off 2024 and welcome the New Year. However, this year’s festival turned out to be a wet affair.

Earlier in the day, meteorologists predicted a rainy New Year’s Eve, and their forecasts proved correct as the rain poured down on the crowd. Thunder could even be heard on broadcasts of the ceremony, including on CNN New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen and ABC Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.

According to CBS News New York, an estimated 1 million people gathered in Times Square and weren’t letting the weather get in the way — even though umbrellas weren’t allowed at the ceremony. Local channel meteorologist Vanessa Murdock gave an update around 10:00 PM local time noting that New York City experienced lightning, wind and heavy rain with a chilly 45 degree weather.
