Nicholas Hoult Almost Got Attacked by Wolves While Filming Nosferatu: 'That's Real Fear'

Real life and fiction merged in Nicholas Hoult’s daring escape from the screen.

The actor appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on December 23, where he told about a terrible moment that happened on the set Nosferatu. Hoult will star alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe and Emma Corrin in the horror drama, which will be released on Christmas Day.

Meyers noted that Hoult was “overwhelmed by the sheer volume of this movie.”

Hoult said that every time he’s been truly terrified in his own life, that feeling has only manifested internally. So, conveying fear and dread outwardly for this film was a new experience for him.

Once he felt “real fear” on Nosferatu the set was, admittedly, when he was chased by wolves. Hoult’s character, Thomas Hutter, escapes through a window in an attempt to escape the wolves that are chasing him.

As those on set prepared to film the scene, the wolves had to be restrained by Hoult.

“I, like, run on the spot and get pumped up before I shoot,” Hoult said. “And they keep them away from me on leashes—barking, like, with death in their eyes. They want to eat.”

Hoult added that in one shot he barely managed to get out of the window because the wolves were “let loose” after him. That shot was unusable, he said, because director Robert Eggers told him he made a stupid face. Hoult reviewed the footage himself and agreed that it was too funny for the final cut, but confirmed to the director that it was a “real scare”.

While that shot was being filmed, the actor realized that he didn’t know what would happen if the wolves really got to him.

“Like, I don’t know what’s going to happen if I don’t make it out the window,” he said. “Like, what are they trained for then?”

Nosferatu it’s in theaters on December 25.
