The last five years finally making his Broadway debut.

More than two decades since its premiere, Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed musical comes to the stage for the first time in a new production starring Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren.

Directed by Tony nominee Whitney White, the revival will open in the spring of 2025 at a yet-to-be-named theater. Tickets go on sale from Monday, July 22.

News of the revival comes almost exactly 25 years after Brown, a three-time Tony Award winner, wrote the first song for The last five years (June 15, 1999). It also comes hours before Jonas and Warren are set to perform at the 2024 Tony Awards.

With book, music and lyrics by Brown, The last five years follows the breakup of a relationship between an up-and-coming novelist named Jamie (Jonas) and a struggling actress named Cathy (Warren) through two different timelines. His perspective is told in chronological order from when the couple first got together, while hers is told in reverse from the end of their marriage.

“I’ve always believed that when the time is right, The last five years would have made it to Broadway,” Brown, 53, said in a statement. “Having Nick and Adrienne in these roles is a composer’s dream come true, and having Whitney’s extraordinary leadership and vision is every playwright’s hope. It took twenty-five years, but the time was right.”

The musical first premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theater in 2001. A year later, a New York production starring Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott premiered off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre.

That tape of the actors helped The last five years became an industry favorite, with songs from the show — including “I Can Do Better Than That,” “Nobody Needs to Know,” “Still Hurting,” “If I Didn’t Believe in You” and “The Next Ten Minutes” — becoming a staple of musical theater over the years.

An off-Broadway revival at New York’s Second Stage Theater came in 2013, starring Adam Kantor and Betsy Wolfe as Jamie and Cathy. Two years later, a film adaptation starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick was released.

In 2016, City Hall in New York hosted a one-night-only concert of the musical hosted by Joshua Henry and Cynthia Erivo. In the same year, the production of The last five years opened in London with Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey and Samantha Barks, breakthrough 2012 Les Miserables movie.

A video of Bailey’s audition has since gone viral, with fans especially circulating it after he was cast in the upcoming film Wicked movies.
