Nicki Minaj gets candid about the ups and downs of motherhood.
Talking about how welcoming her three-year-old son, popularly known as “Daddy Bear,” has changed the dynamic between her and husband Kenneth Petty in her cover story for VogueIn the November issue, the 40-year-old rapper admitted, “I’m not going to lie, things got complicated between us.”
“Because of our history, I think we knew we’d get over it. But there’s no such thing as confidence in parenting,” she explained.
“I kind of wish someone had told me – although I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to understand it – that there’s a certain level of anxiety and you think it’s going to go away, but it actually gets scarier. So often you think: I don’t know how to do this!”

Nicki Minaj celebrates her son’s 2nd birthday with a Minions-themed party: ‘You’re perfect’
“I think deep down I believed that once I had a family, I would just lose the desire to make music,” she said before embarking on a new album and a new chapter in her career. “I would always tell people, ‘Look, when I have a kid, I’m going to cook him every meal and bake him cookies every day.'”
“Maybe subconsciously I was hoping that my focus would just be on being a mother, and I was looking forward to that idea. It felt like a relief,” she continued. “But what happens is you find out you have to work.”
Minaj also shared a story about meeting a woman who felt guilty whether she was raising her family or pursuing a career, and how she felt that conversation should have happened to her.
“I was like, OMFG,” Minaj recalled. “She felt guilty when she was the perfect housewife, and guilty as a working mother when she missed a moment in their lives. Maybe God let that woman say that to me because it made me think, ‘Well, if I’m going to feel guilty regardless, I might as well keep doing the only thing I fucking know how to do, which is make music. ‘”

Later in the interview, Minaj talked about trying out the nanny role for the first time and the adjustment it made for someone else in her parenting dynamic.
After the three-year-old fell for a few quick dance moves, Minaj was frustrated that the babysitter wasn’t there to catch him. When she talked to the nanny about it, the nanny corrected the new mom saying that kids fall all the time and that’s okay.
When she shared the story with friends, “Everyone was looking at me thinking I was going to be out for blood!”
“I was like, ‘Do you all think Nicki Minaj is the same person as me with my kid’s nanny?’ Actually, I didn’t say anything,” she laughed.
