Nicole Byer Reveals the ‘Worst Thing’ She Tasted on Nailed It!: ‘Truly Wild’ (Exclusive)

Like many comedians, Nicole Byer got her start with the wildly popular Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). But she didn’t know that in a few years she would become a big name in cooking competitions, especially in the hit Netflix series, Nail It!.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE on behalf of Resy and American Express, Byer says her career path hasn’t exactly been what she envisioned — but she’s totally fine with that.

“Not even in my wildest dreams did I think that Nail It! to be as big as she was or to be known for hosting a food show,” she says. “But honestly, it’s really freaking great.”

Of course Nail It! it’s not like other cooking shows, with gourmet-level food to judge. Contestants have their fair share of baking failures as they try to replicate famous desserts.

Comedian Nicole Byer finds it ‘hard to be funny’ amid Black Lives Matter protests

“It’s always memorable when someone makes something that you like, ‘This is actually good,'” laughs Byer. “But one of the most memorable dishes, which appeared early in the season, was particularly memorable for the wrong reasons.”

“[A contestant] made a unicorn cake. And half was baked, half was not baked,” she recalls. “So it was really wild to put the cake and the mortar in my mouth and then say, ‘I have to judge this?’ And also, maybe this isn’t the worst thing I’ve put in my mouth today?”

Now Byer is looking forward to hosting the event with slightly higher quality food. She is partnering with Resy and American Express to host The American Express Gold Card and Resy Present: Dip into Gold, which will take place on Saturday, September 30. Guests will be able to sample dishes from a variety of popular New York spots including: Foul Witch, Gertrude’s, Laser Wolf, Lure Fishbar, Jacob’s Pickles, Potluck Club, Ras Plant Based, Seoul Salon NYC, Sylvia’s, Shuka, Stretch Pizza and Yellow Rose.

Byer says she’s not looking forward to trying any particular dish, but “trying everything” — with the unspoken promise to forgo any goopy cake.

“When they asked me to be a part of it, I said, ‘Sure. This sounds like so much fun,’ says Byer.

Byer has been a big fan of cooking shows for some time. She loves Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — tells PEOPLE she plans to impersonate Guy Fieri at a “Dip Into Gold” event — and thinks Gordon Ramsey is “kinda hot” Hell’s kitchen. But her real guilty pleasure is watching Children’s baking championship.

‘I did it!’ It has an official cookbook that helps amateur bakers avoid baking failures

“There’s something about a kid in a fedora saying, ‘I want to make my dad proud,’ and then the next second he’s crying because something he did went completely wrong,” she says. “I sound like the Grinch, where I’m like, ‘I love watching kids’ dreams come crashing down.'”
