News Nicole Hockley
Twenty-first grade students and six teachers were shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School ten years ago. Among the victims was Dylan Hockley. So we’ll never know what could have been, Nicole Hockley said. “He was just a wonderful kid, and he’ll be 6 forever.” But. It makes me so happy when I think of him.
Dylan was a happy, playful, and smiling first grader. Ten years after the unthinkable happened, Nicole Hockley will always remember her son in this way. On December 14, 2012, a shooter opened fire inside an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
Hockley added: “Sometimes it’s extremely difficult for me to realize that she’s 16 now. “He is still six years old, but in ten years he will be 26.” And I really can’t understand that.”
Channeling her grief into action, Nicole Hockley took it upon herself to preserve her son’s memory. Along with Mark Barden, the father of Daniel, another first grader who died that day, she helped found the Sandy Hook Promise organization. The organization’s effective “Say Something” campaign encourages schoolchildren to spot the danger flags.
“We prevented 11 probable school shooting plans. 400 suicide attempts were prevented, there were thousands of mental health interventions, and abuse and isolation were reduced. Therefore, the programs are fully effective and we will only expand them.
Hockley has fought for gun safety legislation for years, running into roadblocks all too often, but something finally happened last summer as a result of his efforts. Both houses of Congress have passed a bipartisan gun safety bill. The “Safer Communities Act” increases background checks, helps states enforce red flag laws, invests in mental health, and increases school safety.
According to some, it has gone too far. It was the most important gun safety legislation passed in 30 years. That’s a big problem then. It was only after a similar elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and nearly ten years after Sandy Hook, that the bill was signed into law.
